Nashville PHP June 2017: Open Source Your Library, Ben Ramsey
Built Technologies, Inc.

Due to a scheduling conflict Marcus Fulbright will not be presenting this time around. He will give the same presentation for the July meeting on 7/11. The new talk for this month will be given by Ben Ramsey.

Open Source Your Library, Ben Ramsey

You’ve downloaded and installed open source libraries, required them as Composer dependencies, and perused the source code of countless GitHub repositories. Now,  you’re ready to help others by open-sourcing your own library. So, what does it take to build and publish an open source library? In this session, we’ll take a look at some of the common patterns open source PHP libraries follow. Along the way, we’ll cover: evaluating libraries for quality, common directory structures, the importance of tests and how to run them on Travis CI, publishing to Packagist, interacting with a community, and more.

About Ben

Ben Ramsey is a web craftsman, author, and speaker. He is a software architect at ShootProof, where he builds a platform for professional photographers. He enjoys organizing user groups and contributing to open source software. Ben blogs at benramsey.com and is @ramsey on Twitter.

Nashville PHP June 2017: PHPChunkIt Library - Jonathan Wage
Built Technologies, Inc.

PHPChunkit is a PHP library built on top of PHPUnit that gives you the ability to chunk your tests and run them in parallel across multiple servers and processes. At OSP we went from 30 minutes of serial running tests to 3 minutes running in parallel with PHPChunkit.

NashvillePHP: Social Hour at Von Elrod's
Von Elrod's Beer Garden & Sausage House

Join us for a social hour at Von Elrod's in German Town. We'll be hanging out, getting to know each other, and talking all things PHP (and probably complaining about Java Script).

We had to change things up last minute due to a conflict with our planned speaker. We will not be having a normal session, just a social hour at Von Elrod's. Hopefully you can still come join us for a great time.

Syntax Is Not Programming
Built Technologies, Inc.

Marcus Fulbright -- Engineer at Atata

Learning programming languages can be scary. Even veteran coders can struggle with learning new languages. Syntax can look intimidating and cause lots of frustration. Luckily, programming languages are built on a set of fundamental principles that change very little between languages. Focusing on these things will separate programming from syntax, and make the learning process easier for everybody.

Viewing: Day Camp 4 Devs App Security
TechnologyAdvice

Get together with members from the rest of Nashville PHP to partake in the latest Day Camp 4 Developers on Application Security. For those that haven't heard of DC4D, its an online event with a host of several speakers all talking about the same theme. Cal Evans organizes this event and always has great people lined up to speak. You can view the details for the DC4D event here.

Due to sponsorships from two awesome local companies, we can provide this event free of charge to all attendees!

SnapShot Interactive has graciously offered to host the event

Atata will purchase the stream and provide lunch & drinks for all attendees

The stream itself starts at 9am, so it'd be best to arrive at SnapShot Interactive before then. The building has its own parking, though it would be great if group members could find ways to carpool.
