Kotlin on Android, with Sean Beach

    BMI

The Kotlin programming language is now a "first class" language for the Android platform, supported in the primary IDE, Android Studio.  Kotlin makes some things very easy, and some things are different -- in Kotlin, there are no raw types, arrays in Kotlin are invariant, and Kotlin does not have checked exceptions.  The list of differences is actually vast, meaning that there will be a learning curve for developers migrating from other languages.

Sean Beach will explain some of these differences, and will dive into the application development cycle in Kotlin.

    Nashville MDUG Hack Night

    BMI

We have 10 Lenovo Phab 2 Project Tango devices on loan from Google. Come on March 28 to experiment and see what you can produce with the buillt-in motion-tracking technology.

The format of this meeting will be flexible. We will make at least one device available for non-developers, just to see what the technology is capable of. Developers will be able to run through a code lab targeting the device, producing an app that runs on the Tango. There is a simple project which really just starts you out with a project that tracks motion from the device's onboard sensors, and will take approximately 20 minutes (assuming all SDK's are already installed). Another more comprehensive Motion Tracking code lab is also available.
