TuesdayFeb 5 2013NashMicro - Soldering, Automated Green Eggs, & BBQ - OH MY!
WHEN: Feb 5, 2013 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
TOPIC: Soldering, Automated Green Eggs, & BBQ - OH MY!
WHERE: Kevin Jett's Home (see below for directions)
SUMMARY: Kevin Jett has completed his NETMF powered Green Egg BBQ and he's invited everyone over to try it out! So, we're moving our regularly planned session on soldering to his house. Kevin will show us how it works, we'll eat pulled pork & baked beans, and if you can still move after that, we'll fire up the soldering guns and practice soldering surface mount and through-hole components. I have several soldering kits that have been donated to the group that we'll be assembling. More than likely everyone will walk away from this meeting with some nice swag (in case the BBQ wasn't enough...).
Also, there is going to be a Mini Maker Faire in Nashville this summer. We'll also be discussing how we want to participate in it.
ABOUT THE MEAL: Kevin is providing the pulled pork, baked beans, soda, & water. I'll bring some chips. If anyone feels inspired to bring other sides, please do so but do but don't feel obligated. We'd love to have a bigger showing at this meeting than at the last couple. We'd rather have you attend w/o bringing anything than not at all. If you can't eat what he's making then you may want to bring an alternative for yourself.
ABOUT THE SOLDERING SESSION: If you have a soldering iron & solder, please bring them. I have one good iron and a couple other cheap ones. I know there are going to be a couple other cheap ones there but it would be nice to have a few more better irons there. They make SMD soldering a LOT easier. Again, better to show up empty handed than not at all. If you have been wanting to buy some good equipment but just haven't done it yet. This would be a great time. Here's a basic list of what I recommend for getting started. (In order of priority in case you can't have it all)
Brass Soldering Iron Tip Cleaner (avoid wet sponges!!!) (iron above includes this) http://www.amazon.com/Aoyue-Soldering-Cleaner-sponge-needed/dp/B005C789EU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1358830489&sr=8-1&keywords=brass+soldering+iron+cleaner
Toothless Alligator Clips (great for holding things together while soldering) https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10290
IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND: Please let me know ahead of time by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org so I can get an idea of how many to expect. Since this is at Kevin's house, this is more important than usual. Again, if you don't get around to RSVPing do not let that stop you from attending! Also, we will be doing the soldering in Kevin's garage which may not be so warm. Come prepared.
This is going to be a great get together. I hope everyone can make it!
