Nashville PHP User Group - Jan 2016: Mocking with Mockery, Intro to jq

    iostudio

We have an excellent meeting lined up for you this month, with two presentations! John Ingram, CTO at RotoGrinders.com will present a mini-talk on jq, and Ben Ramsey, one of our group organizers, will present on the Mockery mock object framework.

We are thankful for the generous support of this month's sponsor, RotoGrinders.com.

RotoGrinders.com is a community serving the daily fantasy games industry. We strive to lead in all faces of the Daily Fantasy Sports industry. If you are an avid daily fantasy player sign up and get ranked.

As sponsors of this meetup, we'll also be happy to answer any questions you might have about the Daily Fantasy Sports industry. We're a Laravel PHP shop, but also friendly to other languages, and making heavy use of lots of Amazon services.

    Introduction to jq, John Ingram

Can you jq? It's the perfect blend of fast JSON-parsing-and-manipulation power and the command-line mentality you've always had. Once you find that you can deal with JSON with jq, you'll be chomping at the bit for more JSON to deal with.

In this talk, John from RotoGrinders will demonstrate some jq tricks, using popular JSON services. Also expect some interaction, as we use our noggins and jq to parse and manipulate JSON together.

    Mocking with Mockery, Ben Ramsey

Mockery is a mock object framework that may be used with any unit testing framework. It is a flexible and human-readable domain specific language (DSL) for mocking objects in unit tests. With it, we can create some pretty powerful tests and even test legacy code containing hard dependencies. In this talk, I’ll show how to get started with Mockery. I’ll start with some basic mocking techniques and then move on to cover more advanced topics, including static methods, partial mocks, final classes, and hard dependencies.

Ben Ramsey is a web craftsman, API enthusiast, and open source software advocate living in Nashville, TN. Passionate about the PHP community, Ben is the founder of Atlanta PHP and co-organizer of Nashville PHP. He has organized conferences, authored articles and books, and is a popular speaker at PHP conferences worldwide. Ben blogs at benramsey.com and is @ramsey on Twitter. His open-source contributions, including the popular ramsey/uuid library for PHP, may be found at github.com/ramsey.

Nashville PHP User Group: Leveraging the Power of Graph Databases in PHP

    iostudio

This month, we're thrilled to have Nashville expat Jeremy Kendall back in town to speak:

While relational databases sit at the core of most of today’s applications, they are not always the best fit for certain data needs. That’s why when building applications with rich connections, analyzing trends and seeing commonalities within data, developers at places like Cisco, Adobe and Twitter have increasingly turned to graph databases.

In this discussion, we'll dive into Neo4j, a popular graph database, and demonstrate how to solve complex, connected data problems with a look at examples demonstrating the power, speed and simplicity of using graph databases. We'll close with a look at some caveats as well as glimpse into the future of graph databases.

NashPHP — Ryan Weaver: Behat v3! BDD, functional tests and Selenium

    iostudio

This month's Nashville PHP Group speaker is international traveler and local PHP celebrity, Ryan Weaver (though you may know him through the Symfony community as weaverryan), and he'll be talking to us about BDD framework Behat:

Testing our applications is something we all do. Ahem, rather, it's something we all wish we did. In this chat, I'll introduce you to Behat, a behavior-driven-development (BDD) library that allows you to write functional tests against your application just by writing human-readable sentences/scenarios.

To sweeten the deal these tests can be run in a real browser (via Selenium2) with just the flip of a switch.

By the end, you'll have everything you need to start functionally testing with Behat in your new, or very old and ugly project.

    Nashville PHPUG: Going Pro

    iostudio

Nashville PHP User Group Tuesday, February 11 at 6:00 PM

Winter weather has forced us to call in Plan B for this month's meetup. We're in the process of rescheduling Shawn, but for now, our own Cal Evans has graciously offered to step up and give us a taste of his SunshinePHP talk (thank you, Cal!):

What makes a developer a "professional developer"? Getting paid? Getting quoted? Publishing a book? Let's take a look at this.

This talk will look at the traits that define a professional developer. Not the hard tech skills, those change with the tools being used. These are the soft and quasi-soft skills that developers have to master to be considered a professional developer.

Along the way there will be some tweetable moments, and of course, a long line of bad jokes. Hopefully though, you will take away a concept that you need to work on to round out your skills and unlock your "Going Pro" badge.
